Why IML wins on food containers

For a container that touches food, IML is also the safest configuration because the ink sits under the film, not on the surface.

Five artwork rules

1. 0.8 mm minimum line weight — thinner lines break during film transfer
2. 3 mm safety margin from the trim edge
3. No gradients finer than 10% — banding shows on curved walls
4. White text needs a white backing layer — an extra pass, extra cost
5. Design for the taper — walls taper 3–8°

Tooling reality

IML needs a label plate inside the mould (USD 1,500–4,000) and a robot with a label magazine on the machine. Not every factory has the robot. If a supplier quotes IML cheaply, ask whether they have inline IML or are printing after moulding and calling it IML. The two are not the same product, and the second one wears off.

The weight impact

IML film adds roughly 0.05–0.08 mm to the wall and 1–2 g to the part. On PF-RG750 at 25 g, that is 26–27 g — worth recalculating the loaded container quantity, because at 150 sets per carton the tonnage moves from 9.3 t to about 9.6 t, still inside the limit but closer.

FAQ

Can IML do photographic images? Yes, 4-colour process plus white backing. Very fine detail is limited by the film.

Which models take IML best? Large flat panels: lids and the base of rectangular containers. Highly curved round bowls distort artwork most.

Is there a cheaper way to brand a stock container? Yes — a printed label or a sleeve, at lower tooling and higher unit cost.
