Leak-Proof PP Container: Gasket vs Valve vs Fit

Leak-Proof PP Container: Gasket vs Valve vs Fit

Three mechanisms

MechanismLeak performanceCostConstraint
Gasket (silicone/TPE)high+20–30%extra part, assembly
Valve (one-way)high for hot fill+15%vents steam, stops liquid
Interference fitmedium–high+5%round only, tight tolerance

Why hot fill defeats most lids

Fill at 90°C, close the lid, then cool. The air inside contracts, creating negative pressure that pulls the lid down and the gasket inward. On cooling, the seal can creep and leak. A one-way valve solves this: steam escapes during fill, air cannot re-enter.

For soups and sauces in delivery, valve + gasket is the reliable combination.

The test protocol

Do not accept "we tested it". Specify:

  1. Fill with water at the customer's real temperature
  2. Close, then invert for 30 minutes at ambient
  3. Shake 20 times at 2 Hz
  4. Place in a bag with a 3 kg load on top for 30 minutes
  5. Zero leakage on 10 of 10 samples

FAQ

Are gaskets food safe? Silicone and food-grade TPE, yes. Ask for the migration report.

Can a gasket be replaced? Only on reusable containers; on disposable ones it is moulded in.

Next step

Describe your fill temperature and delivery method. We will quote the closure that survives it, not the cheapest one.
