Custom Colour and Pantone Matching for PP Containers

Custom Colour and Pantone Matching for PP Containers

How colour actually gets into the container

PP pellets are natural (translucent, slightly milky). Colour comes from masterbatch — a pellet concentrate of pigment dispersed in a carrier resin — blended at 1–4% by weight.

Three consequences follow:

  • The base resin affects the result. The same masterbatch on two suppliers' PP gives two slightly different colours.
  • Wall thickness affects apparent colour. A 0.5 mm wall reads lighter than a 1.0 mm wall at the same let-down ratio.
  • Food contact is regulated. Pigments must comply with EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 178.3297. Not every Pantone is achievable with compliant pigments.

The realistic range

ColourFeasibilityNotes
Natural / translucentstandard, no chargeshows fill level, cheapest
Whitestandard, no chargemost common for food service
Blackstandard, no chargepremium deli look, hides scratches
Solid primaries (red, blue, green)achievablePantone match, setup charge
Pastelsachievable but hardercolour drift is visible across batches
Metallicslimitedfood-contact pigments restricted
Fluorescentnot recommendedunstable under heat and light
Clear / transparentdifferent resin pathrequires a clarified grade, not just masterbatch

If a customer sends a Pantone number, the honest answer is: we can match it to a ΔE we agree on, not to the number. ΔE under 1.5 is a tight match; 2–3 is commercially acceptable; above 3 the eye picks it up side by side.

Where colour costs money

ItemWhy it costs
Masterbatch setupone-off, per colour
Minimum runtypically 500 kg–1 t of resin per colour, because the extruder must run clean
Purge wastethe transition from white to red wastes material
Batch consistencya second production run needs a retained sample to match against
Food-contact testinga new pigment may require a migration test

The minimum run is the killer for small buyers. 500 kg of PP at 20 g per container is 25,000 pieces. If your order is 30,000 pieces in a custom colour, you are buying a colour run, not a container run — and the second order will cost less per piece than the first.

How to run a colour project without losing money

  1. Send a physical sample, not a Pantone chip. A chip on screen or paper does not account for gloss, wall thickness or the resin.
  2. Approve a moulded sample, not a colour plaque. The plaque lies; the container tells the truth.
  3. Retain the approved sample. Both sides keep one, sealed, dated. It is the only defence against a batch argument in month six.
  4. Agree the tolerance in writing — ΔE value, and under which light source (D65 is standard).
  5. Fix the resin source. If the factory changes PP supplier mid-programme, the colour shifts even with the same masterbatch.

Colour and the food-service buyer

Restaurant chains buy colour for brand consistency; distributors buy colour to differentiate their own label; supermarkets buy colour to signal tier (black = premium, white = standard, clear = fresh).

If you are quoting a chain, expect them to send a brand guide with Pantone references and expect them to reject a ΔE above 2. Price the risk in: a rejected colour batch is a full production run, not a repaint.

FAQ

Is black PP food-safe? Yes, with carbon-black-free compliant pigments. Carbon black itself is restricted in some food-contact applications — ask which pigment system the factory uses.

Can you print on a coloured container? Yes, but contrast drops. IML on black needs a white base layer; screen printing on red rarely reads.

Does colour change the price of the container? The moulding cost is the same. The masterbatch adds a small per-kilo cost, and the minimum run adds a one-off charge.

Can I get a clear PP container? Only with a clarified grade resin, not with masterbatch. It is a different material purchase, not a colour option — and the price difference is larger than most buyers expect.
