Round vs Square PP Container: Which Loads Better
Head to head
| Round | Square / rectangular | |
|---|---|---|
| Pieces per 40HQ | baseline | +12–18% |
| Seal reliability | high (even rim) | medium (corners) |
| Mould cost | lower | higher |
| Stacking stability | medium | high |
| Fill-line speed | fast | fast |
| Best for | soup, noodles, ice cream | rice, combos, meal prep |
The corner problem, quantified
A square container has four stress concentrations. In a 1.2 m drop test:
- round container: failure rate ~2%
- square with 5 mm corner radius: ~6%
- square with 12 mm corner radius: ~3%
The radius is the whole difference. If a buyer insists on square for loading efficiency, insist on radius ≥10 mm.
When round actually costs more
Round is cheaper to mould but more expensive to ship. On a 100,000 pc order, the 15% loading disadvantage of round containers can add USD 400–900 in ocean freight. For large repeat orders, square pays back the mould premium in 2–3 shipments.
FAQ
Can a square container be leak-proof? Yes, with a gasket lid. Without a gasket, expect seepage at corners under load.
Which is better for automated filling? Square — consistent orientation, easier denesting.
