How thickness is measured (and faked)

Suppliers quote average wall. What matters is minimum wall at the weakest point — usually the base corner or the rim transition. A container with 0.6 mm average and 0.38 mm at the corner will fail exactly where nobody measured.

Ask for a cross-section photo with callipers at five points: base centre, base corner, side wall, rim, and divider (if any).

The economics

Going from 0.5 to 0.6 mm adds about 20% material — but only about 12% to the unit price, because machine time is unchanged. Per container-load, that is a few hundred dollars. Per claim, it is the difference between a credit note and losing the account.

FAQ

Is thicker always better? No. Beyond 0.8 mm you lose nesting efficiency, so fewer pieces per container, and the freight penalty can exceed the durability gain.

Does wall thickness affect food safety? It affects migration test outcomes indirectly — thinner walls can release more per unit area. Test the actual article.

Tell us the fill temperature and how the product is handled. We will specify minimum wall at the critical points, not just an average.
