What #5 actually gets recycled into

Rigid PP is recyclable and has real end markets: crates, bins, automotive parts, some fibre applications. The constraint is not the material but the collection stream — most curbside programs accept rigid PP containers, but acceptance is not the same as actual recycling.

Two practical problems for food containers:

1. Food residue — heavily soiled containers are rejected or downcycled
2. Black and dark colours — near-infrared sorting struggles with carbon black, so black containers are often missed by automated sorting

The black container problem

If a customer specifies black PP for premium positioning, the container is technically recyclable but practically sorted out. If recyclability is part of the brand promise, specify a non-carbon black or another dark colour that NIR sorters can detect.

Is PP better than PET for recycling? Both are established streams. PET has higher collection volume for bottles; PP has good rigid-container acceptance.

Can PP containers be made from recycled PP for food contact? In the EU, only under Regulation 2022/1616 with authorised processes and registration. Limited availability.
