Microwave-Safe PP Container: What to Verify
What to ask, in order
- Resin grade — food-grade PP homopolymer, with the supplier's declaration
- Wall thickness — ≥0.5 mm for 100°C, ≥0.6 mm for repeated cycles
- Migration test condition — should include 2 hours at 70°C or 1 hour at 100°C depending on the food
- Whether the lid is microwave-safe too — PET lids are not
Most "microwave safe" failures come from the lid, not the base.
PP heat behaviour
| Temperature | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| up to 100°C | stable, normal use |
| 100–110°C | softens, base may bow under load |
| 110–120°C | visible deformation |
| >120°C | not suitable |
PP's melting point is around 160–170°C, but useful service temperature for a thin-wall container is much lower because stiffness, not melting, is the limit.
FAQ
Can PP containers go in an oven? No. Microwave only.
Is MFPP microwave safe? At low power, generally yes; at high power the mineral filler can cause hot spots.
Does printing affect it? IML is fine; some surface inks are not.
