The cost reality of PLA
PLA resin runs roughly 2× PP. Beyond resin, PLA needs:
- lower processing temperatures — slower cycles, lower output per hour
- certification — EN 13432 / ASTM D6400 per SKU, plus a certification body fee
- separate collection — a compostable container in a landfill is worse than a recyclable one for brand risk
A compostable container that ends up in general waste is a marketing claim that does not survive scrutiny. If a customer wants PLA, ask where it will actually be composted.
The clarity question
PP can be clarified to near-PET clarity at a 15–25% premium, but it still reads slightly warmer and scratches more. If the product is sold from a chilled display case, PET's intrinsic clarity is hard to beat at the same price.
The heat question, plainly
| Use | Material |
|---|---|
| Hot soup, 90°C fill | PP |
| Microwave reheat by consumer | PP |
| Chilled salad, retail display | PET |
| Cold dessert, premium look | PET |
| Compostable claim required | PLA or bagasse |
FAQ
Can PLA be microwaved? Generally no — it softens around 55–60°C, and "heat-resistant PLA" grades are limited and costly.
Is PP recyclable in practice? Yes, #5 is accepted in most curbside programs in Europe and North America, though rates vary by region.
Which is cheapest landed? PP, usually by 10–20% once freight and breakage are included.
