Ghost Kitchen Packaging: Cost per Order
Cost per order, by menu type
| Menu | Packaging per order (USD) |
|---|---|
| Burgers and fries | 0.30–0.55 |
| Rice and bowls | 0.35–0.60 |
| Soup and noodles | 0.45–0.75 |
| Sushi and platters | 0.60–1.10 |
| Multi-item family meal | 0.90–1.60 |
The three levers
- SKU reduction. Cutting from 8 container sizes to 3 typically saves 8–15% — volume discount plus less dead stock.
- Lid standardisation. One lid across two bases halves the lid inventory and the picking errors.
- Sauce cup discipline. A 2oz cup costs almost nothing per unit and 5–8% of packaging spend per month. Right-sizing from 2oz to 1oz where the portion allows is a direct saving.
What not to cut
- Wall thickness on hot items — a 0.4 mm container on 90°C food produces refunds that exceed the saving
- Leak-proof lids on liquid items — same arithmetic
- Venting on fried food — a soggy product creates a review, and reviews cost more than containers
FAQ
Is it worth buying in a container-load? At 200 orders/day, a 40HQ of mixed SKUs lasts roughly 4–7 months. Storage cost usually decides.
Do aggregator platforms dictate packaging? Some do for branded programs; otherwise no.
