PP Container Microwave Temperature Limit: Real Numbers
Service temperature by part
| Part | Practical limit | What fails first |
|---|---|---|
| Base, 0.5 mm wall | 100°C | base bows under load |
| Base, 0.7 mm wall | 110°C | rim distortion |
| Flat lid | 85–90°C | lid domes and pops |
| Dome lid | 95–100°C | seal creep |
| PP/EVOH film lid | 90°C | delamination |
Why containers fail below the melting point
PP is semi-crystalline. As it approaches its melting range, the amorphous regions soften first, so the part loses stiffness well before it melts. A container holding 800 g of food at 100°C carries a real load on a base that has lost 40% of its rigidity. It bows, and the lid separates.
This is why "PP is microwave safe up to 120°C" is technically true for the material and misleading for a 0.5 mm container.
Test conditions in the regulations
Migration testing for microwave reheating typically uses:
- 2 hours at 70°C, or
- 1 hour at 100°C
These are test conditions, not a statement that every container tolerates 100°C in real use. Match the test condition to how the customer actually reheats.
What to specify for microwave programs
- Wall ≥0.6 mm on the base
- Homopolymer PP, not MFPP
- A lid rated for the same temperature, or no lid during reheating
- A base rib pattern to maintain stiffness when hot
FAQ
Can I microwave a PP container with a PET lid? No — PET deforms around 70–75°C. Remove the lid or use a PP lid.
Is MFPP microwave safe? At low power for short periods, generally yes. At high power the mineral filler creates hot spots.
Does food fat content matter? Yes. Fatty foods reach higher surface temperatures and migrate more. Test with the real food.
Next step
Tell us the reheat temperature and duration. We will specify wall and lid so the container survives the real cycle, not the catalogue claim.
